When to Buy Your Wedding Dress

When to Buy Your Wedding Dress

Planning a wedding involves a lot of moving parts, from catering to florals to entertainment and everything in between. With the amount of details you need to plan, it’s key you take care of everything with time to spare so that it’s all perfect on your wedding day. To help you plan, we’re giving a timeline of what you can expect when buying your wedding dress, from start to finish.

After You Say “Yes”

Once you’re engaged, wedding planning begins! Before booking your bridal shopping appointments, have your venue and wedding date set. This will help you narrow down what dress you want to wear, as you’ll likely want to take season and weather into account while shopping. Knowing your wedding venue and date helps you to better picture what your wedding day will look like, making shopping smoother and easier.

8-10 Months Out

Once you’ve set your date and venue, start shopping as soon as possible. 8-10 months may seem long, but trust us, you’ll want the time! Buying a wedding dress is not a typical retail experience—your designer has to completely construct your wedding dress, which includes sourcing materials and sewing your gown to your size along with adding embellishments. This process takes several months from the date you make your order, and you want to be sure to have enough time for alterations.

2 Months Out

After your wedding dress finally arrives, you’ll need alterations. Not every bride needs extensive alterations—more likely than not, you’ll need small adjustments, like raising your hem—but almost all brides need some sort of alteration. This is to ensure that your wedding dress fits perfectly on your wedding day.
